I grew up in Somerset Wisconsin, a small town best known for the apple river tubing! I was very active in sports growing up, although my heart was in wrestling. I truly believed that I could wrestle at the collegiate level and dedicated countless hours trying to achieve my athletic goals. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and had multiple herniated discs in my neck. This caused my wrestling career to come to an abrupt halt midway through my junior wrestling season. After that injury, I gave up all sports as I lost the passion to compete. I am so thankful to have amazing friends and family that helped me to stay positive for what felt like at the time, a serious life event.
After graduating high school in 2006, I went to Michigan Tech University and received my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering. The idea to do a triathlon was sparked in my head when drinking keg beer in my basement with a buddy. Don’t all good ideas involve beer?! Anyways, he mentioned he was thinking about doing the first annual Kuparisaari triathlon in Copper Harbor, MI. This would be the first ever Half Ironman in the UP. I’ve done some running and biking growing up and did swim lessons through the third grade… I thought to myself, I could do this!
The very next day I signed up for the race which was three months away. When I commit to something, I give it 110%. For the next three months, I did just that! I borrowed my dad’s old road bike, my aunt’s wetsuit, and got to work! I came a long ways in those three months and had an amazing first race finishing in just under 5:05 and 19th overall. Training for that race completely re-lit my passion to compete and has changed me in many ways, both mentally and physically.
After graduating from college, I moved to Kohler, WI where I took a job as a Noise and Vibration Engineer at Kohler Engines. It wasn’t until 2013 that I slowly got back to triathlon after a couple year hiatus. My passion for this sport continues to grow each year. I completed my first ironman in 2015 and now I can’t imagine going a year without one!
Thanks for following along in my journey. I am looking forward to seeing where this amazing sport takes me!
